Thumb Arthritis
By Vanessa Truxal, MS, OTR/L, CHT, Occupational Therapist
Atlantic Physical Therapy Center
Arthritis is a condition that affects the joints.  A common cause of pain at the base of the thumb is osteoarthritis.  This is called the first CMC (carpometacarpal) joint, or basal joint.  Over time this causes a wearing away of the cartilage in the joint. Some early signs of thumb arthritis are pain in the thumb with gripping or pinching, loss of strength for activities that require gripping or pinching, aching with prolonged use of the hand or thumb, swelling around the joints of the thumb, stiffness or restricted motion of the thumb, and a bony prominence at the base of the thumb.
